We have been using crisis and conflict mapping to reconstruct the chain of events during a specific period of time of a conflict, by gathering and analysing information from different sources (using techniques from different disciplines, e.g. statistics, human geography, anthropology, GIS, criminology, military strategy, epidemiology, etc.), in order to identify the temporal and geographic patterns of violations of human rights and/or of the laws of war, as well as to determine the role of those who bear the greatest responsibility for their conduct.
The reconstruction of events and their legal analysis according to international criminal law serves to prevent denial and establishes prima facie accountability for Human rights violations, as well as for violations of international humanitarian law, and international criminal law.
In this Session, we will present several case studies where the abovementioned techniques were applied, and will discuss the future developments and main challenges such as the need of international standards for reporting human rights abuses.
