THE INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON CRISIS MAPPING (ICCM 2009)

Leveraging mobile platforms, computational linguistics, geospatial technologies, and visual analytics to power effective early warning for rapid response to
complex humanitarian emergencies.

CLEVELAND, OCTOBER 16-18, 2009

If a picture is worth a thousand words, then a Crisis Map is worth ten thousand lives.

The Harvard Humanitarian Initiative (HHI) and the Department of Political Science at John Carroll University (JCU) jointly hosted the first International Conference on Crisis Mapping in October 2009. The conference co-founders and organizers are Patrick Meier and Jen Ziemke. For a primer on Crisis Mapping, please follow this link. If you missed ICCM 2009, virtually all the content is available online: Working Groups, Tech Fair participants, Photos, Videos of Ignite Talks and Keynote, and Tweets! In addition, the contact list of participants is available here and all conference presentation slides are here.

The conference was sponsored in part by the Open Society Institute (OSI), Humanity United (HU), and the US Institute of Peace (USIP).

The purpose of the 3-day conference was to bring together the most engaged practitioners, scholars, software developers and policymakers at the cutting edge of crisis mapping to define the future of the field along with best practices and lessons learned. Over 60 organizations were represented and multiple partnerships were formed on specific projects during the conference.

Please note: due to the incredible response and interest that this conference generated, we were strained to capacity and unfortunately unable to open this conference further. Please join us at ICCM 2010!

Acknowledgments

As the co-organizers of ICCM 2009, we would like to extend our sincere thanks to OSI, HU and USIP for supporting this conference and the field of crisis mapping.

Many thanks as well to Development Seed for their pro-bono services on developing the conference logo and poster; to Emily and Mark of Digital Democracy for multimedia support; to Lydia Giroud of Graphite.ch for her excellent graphic design work; Laurent Haug for promoting ICCM on the LIFT website; Rent-A-Center for providing 20 affordable 42" flat-screen LCD monitors for our Tech Fair; and Phil at Torrence Sound for last-minute audio needs. We are grateful to Matt Herbert and Ida Hagtun of The Fletcher School for their support on media strategy and implementation. We also very much appreciate the entire team of staff, students, faculty, tech-support and administrators at JCU and in the Department of Political Science volunteering in support of ICCM, most especially Patience Fiodembo, Terry Bradley, Bill Myers (video production), Maya Saryyeva, Barrie Landrock, Rory Hill, Eric Barone and staff at Aramark, Dean Birch, and the entire ITS Team working with George Alaimo and Ross Dawson. In Sponsored Research, Cathy Anson's calming, helpful, and thoughtful advice helps us make it through the day. At JCU, Paul Lauritzen in the Program in Applied Ethics and Lauren Bowen offered financial support. We appreciate the artistry of Linda Ziemke's beautiful artisan vessels, and thank her for her work on stage design. Brendan and Dierdre Ring offered exceptional hospitality, expert entrees, and world-renowned live music at our favorite place in Cleveland, Nighttown. We encourage you to visit this long-standing Cleveland institution next time you are in town. Last but not least, we would like to thank Chris Blow of Meedan and Mikel Maron of Open Street Map for their technical support behind the scenes.
