I've implemented one of the zany ideas we came up with in this group, audio maps.
Here's the audio version of DC (gets interesting once you hit Virginia Ave, at 2:10 or so. and the code is on GitHub in the same repository as real distance maps.
An our self-organized sessions we discussed various issues and ideas on how to improve map design, interactive maps, paper, temporal, and so forth.

Bio
My background is in Aerospace Engineering, where I studied the development and application of artificial intelligence and learning algorithms to attitude control and dynamics of spacecraft and airships.
While living in Europe in 2002, I saw the convergence of space sensing, mobile devices, geolocation, digital media, and people and the potential to provide advanced tools based on context, need and desire.
I wrote "Introduction to Neogeography" in 2006 in order to provide an approachable information and methods for anyone to easily build and share their geographic stories.
Since then, I've worked on building tools, techniques, and communities around the capturing and sharing of stories utilizing location as a common context.
Crisis in particular provides a very poignant scenario in which many actors from a wide range of expertise and discipline quickly connect to share information and communicate through just in time and re-appropriated interfaces.
