Petra, Thanks again! Also extreemely useful. It seems like a 'dataset' section would be helpful for researchers, and may be useful for comparing with 'live' data available from event monitoring systems. We'll put these togeather with our own researc…

Hi Geoff, Find below a doc, with a summary table, I attached to my mission report. As every classification, it has its own limits. I still believe/hope it might help a bit to give a global picture. By the way, critics/comments are most welcome.…

Hello, My colleagues and I worked on something similar during 2003-2005. We thought that from the point of view of modeling it is good to know where to find what kind of data on what kind of issues or social entities. We published a short paper in…

Full article (08 Oct): http://www.alertnet.org/db/an_art/57964/2009/09/8-142901-1.htm

MANILA - When the worst flooding in 40 years hit the Philippines, cutting off power and shutting down mobile phone networks in many areas, tech-savvy locals turned to the Internet's social networking sites to get information flowing about friends, neighbours and strangers stuck in the rising waters.
In the critical hours that followed, residents of Greater Manila who had been overwhelmed by twice the amount of… Continue

Thanks Astrid! Amended, with apologies to your colleague - unintentional product of sleep deprivation, I'm afraid.

Hi Geoffrey, thanks for posting the story about the Philippines and Twitter etc. It's actually an AlertNet story, not a ReliefWeb story as you say in your headline. I see you got the original URL from AlertNet at the top but would be great to see AlertNet in the headline too:) - since our correspondent went there to report on the floods and did a nice job pulling the social media efforts together.
