Bio
As a software developer at Avencia, Inc. (www.avencia.com), Josh Marcus is the lead developer on DecisionTree, a set of innovative web-based geographic decision-making tools that enable business owners, citizen or government agencies to weigh multiple geographic factors and generate a map that highlights optimal locations for their activities. He has also worked on Harvard's AfricaMap project and the Kaleidocade analysis system.
He has spent the last decade applying his software engineering, system architecture, and management experience to building sophisticated, scalable web-based applications to solve social and organizational problems for governmental organizations and non-profits using innovative technology solutions. Prior to joining Avencia, Mr. Marcus served as Chief Technology Officer for Solutions for Progress, a public policy technology company. As a technical volunteer and community activist, Josh built dynamic maps to track live volunteer progress for the Barack Obama campaign and was a founding technical contributor to the Philadelphia Independent Media Center.
Early warning of changing conditions and rapid notification are critical aspects of many crises. Avencia is the recipient of a National Science Foundation grant to support development of a web-based software system, HunchLab, capable of scanning millions of records for statistically significant “spikes” in events and then dispatching alerts based on geographically defined subscriptions and providing tools for analysis of the identified spikes in activity. A prototype was developed and deployed in 2005 for the Philadelphia Police Department, but the NSF-funded effort is aimed at creating a more generalized software tool capable of being used in any part of the world. It has been successfully tested with crime, real estate and public health data.
