Jean-Matthieu Buton Haïti : Comprehensive building damage assessment map

The map presents a total building count and damage as assessed from both satellite and post event aerial survey imagery covering the Commune of Port-au-Prince. Damaged buildings were classified according to visually-assessed damage levels. At this time this is one of the most accurate and complete damage map I have seen for this event.

J A Ginsburg TrackerNews.net / Haiti Resources Page

Hello All, Luke Beckman invited me onto the group some time ago - a few of you know me, but for those who don't... My name is Janet Ginsburg and I edit http://www.TrackerNews.net, an aggregator that focuses on health (human, animal, eco), humanitarian work and technology that supports both. It is a little unusual in that stories are not organized by category, but grouped for contextual relevance (breaking news, research papers, blog posts… Continue

Justyna Zander Climate models

Climate models are still in an underdeveloped state. Though, in five to ten years from now, there is a potential that the situation changes, some scientists predict. Let us look at the issue closer. In the physorg news last month, a few statements of Mahowald and Hess raise my attention. "Models of the physical climate that attempt to predict how the interaction of land, atmosphere, and oceans will determine future t… Continue

Justyna Zander Supercomputation nowadays

I have been traveling around in the last month and this has contributed to my better understanding of Computation, in general, and in the context of climate change-related issues. And so, the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) impressed me a lot with its ability of applying the supercomputation power for climate predictions. To that end, the… Continue

Patrick Meier From Baselines to Basemaps: Crisis Mapping for Monitoring & Evaluation (M&E)

I was just in Berlin for meetings with Transparency International and the topic of mapping for Monitoring & Evaluation came up yet again. Earlier this year, Mercy Corps and UNDP Sudan both expressed an interest in exploring the application of crisis mapping platforms for M&E. Problem is, the field of M&E—particularly with regards to peacebuilding and post-conflict reconstruction—is devoid of any references to mapping.… Continue

Patrick Meier Applying Fluid Dynamics to Crisis Mapping

The Economist just published a fascinating article on fluid dynamics called “The Skeleton of Water” which may have important implications for Crisis Mapping Analytics. We often speak of conflict in terms of waves, e.g., “preventing the next wave of conflict,” but there may be more to the analogy than meets the eye. Continue reading... Continue
