THE INTERNATIONAL NETWORK OF CRISIS MAPPERS

Bangladesh is a developing country of the South-East Asia. It is suffering froma lot of problems starting from the political turbulances to natural disasters and from a vulnerable economy to a corruption-prone bureaucracy. It is one of the most densely populated area of the world. The population of this country is more than 150 million and the literacy rate is below 50%. Most of those literate people know little beyond how write and read their own names. The electrical power supply is not yet available to the rural areas and the power supply is not sufficient for the city areas either. The advancement of technologies are not at its best in this part of the world and except for the big cities, the touch of technologies are rarely found in the country. The main mean of earning livelihood for most of the people is farming and the farmers are still using age-old techniques and hence, their fates are depndent upon the mercy of the nature.

Recently, there have been a number of efforts taken by both the governement and international organizations to change the quality of life of the mass people of Bangladesh by the help of technology. Very recently, Prof. Younus won the Nobel Prize in Peace fore his unique contribution in micro-economy for changing the fate of some poor people. The computer education are being compulsory in the schools and colleges. The modern officesa nd institutions are being computerized very quickly. Mobile telephonews are hugely used by the general mass. The availability of internet is spreading very fast in the capital and bigger cities.Internet on mobile devices is also getting more and more available. There has been an increasing number of facebook users in last 2/3 years in the country.i-phones and other 3G mobile phones are not that much popular yet.

Bangladesh is situated by the side of the Bay of Bengal. Basically, it is a low land. Floods are the most common occurances in the country. Every year, there are floods in different parts of the country and a huge loss of lives and properties take place. Cyclones are also frequent in the coastal areas. These cyclones are generally violent and they claim both lives and properties of the coastal people. During these disasters, diarrhoea and other diseases spread out quickly via water and other means and cause epidemic. The health service system is not a robust one and medicines are not cheap, too. The international volunteer organizations try their best to help the victims.

Bangladesh is not a wel-mapped region on the OpenStreetmap. The capital, Dhaka is comparatively well-mapped than the other portions of the country. The coastal areas are not well-mapped and hence people struggle to provide health services during the disasters. The Yahoo! imagery is only available for Dhaka and yet, not very clear. Some automated vehicle tracking companies and mobile phone companies have made some maps for their own interests and those are not open to all. Map-based services are almost absent int he country.

Its true that the Govt has taken a number of initiatives for mapping, but those maps are not yet publicly available. I dont think they will be available for mass use either in near future. So, we need to develop volunteer effort to develop OpenStreetMap for Bangladesh. I am trying for the same. Lets see what happens.

Thank you for your comment. I will keep posting and keep you all updated.

Hi Syed,
It will be nice to see more geo-spatial online content for Bangladesh and for other developing countries. Government of Bangladesh (GOB) use sophisticated GIS and Hydrological flood forecasting model for disaster prevention (CEGIS, SWMC, BWDB, WARPO and SPARRSO etc). Access to that information online will generate tremendous interests among the community. Some of the best practices on pre-post disaster information management in BD could be exemplary for many developing countries.

Beside geographical size (144,000sq.km) of BD is an advantage to completely digitize the country and make necessary information online for saving life from flood, cyclone, bank erosion, tornado, road accident, earth quake and many other natural and manmade disasters, not to mention uses by many other interest groups.
